The third joint study day was held on 15th May 2009 at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff. In the morning there were five presentations:
- Keynote Address, Jane Davidson A.M. Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, Welsh Assembly Government
- A research led construction industry for a low carbon future, Professor Phil Jones, Head of the Welsh School of Architecture
- Working collaboratively to achieve a low carbon environment, Milica Kitson, Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence Wales
- Update on the DCSF’s Zero Carbon Taskforce, Robin Nicholson, Senior Director of Edward Cullinan Architects, joint Deputy Chairman of CABE and Chairman of DCSF Zero Carbon Taskforce
- Research through design Wayne Forster, Deputy Head of the Welsh School of Architecture.
In the afternoon there was a choice of workshops or the opportunity to Tour CRiBE’s Environmental Laboratory (Wind Tunnel, artificial sky and Heliodon and visit to the Design Research Unit). The workshops were:
- Achieving Low Impact Educational Buildings – An Illustrative approach, Richard Dinsdale, Regional Director of Design, Capita Symonds
- Passivhaus – a route to carbon neutral, case study, David Bradley, Construction Procurement & Premises Manager, Powys County Council
- Zero Carbon School – Devon County Council, David Coley, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Energy and the Environment University of Exeter
- The cost effectiveness of Renewables – Practical Experiences, Phil Harris, Chief Engineer, Worcestershire County Council. Phil has also included the renewable energy lifetime co2 predictor spreadsheet used in his presentation, which calculates the predicted lifetime cost of carbon savings for various renewable energy technologies
- Award winning Eco Building (used for environmental seminars/workshops), Edward Evans, Head of Property & Engineering, Torfaen Borough Council.
- Meeting the challenges of low carbon refurbishment, Karen Griffiths and Anna Halcro-Johnston, Account Managers, Carbon Trust Wales.
Finally there was a Summing up session from George Martin, Head of Sustainability, Willmot Dixon and Craig White, Director, White Design.
